Tri-Valley YMCA Family A WellPoint Foundation grant supports three YMCAs in Los Angeles and their motivational programs that encourage an active lifestyle and healthy eating habits. These programs target underserved kids and their families.
UCLA School of Public Health UCLA School of Public Health Research funded by WellPoint demonstrated that salad bars offered at lunchtime can increase children's fruit and vegetable consumption. As a result, six new bars were introduced into LA schools in 2010. This research also triggered proposed national legislation that led to First Lady Michelle Obama's "Let's Move! Salad Bars 2 Schools" campaign.
LA Lakers' Foundation A grant from the WellPoint Foundation supports the LA Times in Education Lakers' School of Champions, a health-based classroom literacy program. The award-winning curriculum is used by more than 200,000 students.

Rocky Mountain Public Broadcasting Service With support from a WellPoint Foundation grant, Rocky Mountain PBS launched "Healthy Impact 2010." This educational initiative offers a range of resources to help baby boomers and seniors live healthier, more fulfilling lives. It features on-air segments and online programs with tips about seniors' well-being, and a phone bank at the PBS studios providing answers to health-related questions and issues.
Alzheimer's Association WellPoint was a sponsor of the Alzheimer's Association's Walk to End Alzheimer's events in cities all across Colorado. More than 100 WellPoint associates participated in the walks. These events raise vital funds to support programs and educational services offered at no cost to 72,000 families and caregivers in Colorado living with Alzheimer's. They also aid in the advancement of research, and in efforts to find a cure.

One of the only programs of its kind in the nation, the Breath Express is a total learning experience that travels to schools and communities throughout Connecticut.

Radio Disney: "Get Active, Get Fit!"
WellPoint sponsored Radio Disney's "Get Active, Get Fit!" School Challenge. In 2010, the program helped educate 41,000 students in 116 schools throughout Kentucky about the importance of a healthy and active lifestyle. Schools that completed the challenge with the highest participation rates won dance parties, and those who were first to register received gym equipment.

Kentucky Health Screenings WellPoint is a longtime sponsor of free health screenings at the Kentucky Derby Festival and the Kentucky State Fair. In 2010, nearly 500 people were screened for body mass index, blood pressure, and cholesterol, and some 1,500 people were given skin-cancer check-ups.

Maine Children's Cancer Program In 2010, the Maine Children's Cancer Program Strike Out Cancer in Kids campaign was a huge success. Get Fit 3v3 Soccer Tournament
Nearly 60 teams, totalling more than 350 kids, played at this first-ever tournament in Las Vegas. For many participants, this was their first chance to play in a three-on-three soccer tournament. In addition to the soccer games, participants were encouraged to visit informational booths set up by non-profit health organizations.

Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation The WellPoint Foundation supported Las Vegas’s first-ever Hope & Health Diabetes Symposium. It drew 500 participants of all ages and offered them early education about reducing and preventing the harmful effects of uncontrolled diabetes. Healthcare professionals gave talks, and a Kids’ Day Camp provided fun learning opportunities. The symposium gave participants the tools and resources to reduce diabetes complications and healthcare costs.
American Lung Association WellPoint was the premier sponsor for “Scale the Strat” to benefit the American Lung Association. Nearly 150 people, including six WellPoint associates, climbed 108 stories straight up the Stratosphere tower — the tallest in Las Vegas. This event supports the ALA’s mission to save lives by improving lung health and preventing lung disease.

Life Gate is a pediatric treadmill that helps increase the mobility of children with disabilities. Dancing aids cardiovascular conditioning and builds strong bones and muscles, which helps with balance. It also improves memory skills.
Brookdale Medical Center A WellPoint Foundation grant helped fund the Brookdale Medical Center’s “Live Light Live Right” program. Physical fitness workers helped overweight and obese children improve their body-mass index, blood pressure, cholesterol, and cardiovascular fitness and change their attitudes about healthy eating. It also conducts seminars for teachers in local public schools, and educates medical residents about obesity.

Virginia 4-H: Healthy Living Program
More than 8,000 children and adults are making better food choices and increasing their physical activity through the 4H Healthy Living program supported by a WellPoint Foundation grant. The program highlights the concepts of Smart Foods, Smart Choices, Smart Drinks, Smart Snacks, Smart Activities and Smart Image.

Giving 2010
Virginia Public Safety Foundation A WellPoint Foundation grant supported the Virginia Public Safety Foundation’s Healthy Heroes program, designed to help 165,000 law enforcement officers and firefighters reduce cardiac risks.
Senior Navigator WellPoint Foundation funding is helping Senior Navigator with its Aging Well: Healthy Choices Solution Center program. The goal is empower seniors to increase their physical activity, eat more healthily, and stop smoking. It employs educational resources, interactive tools and community-based programs.
American Heart Association The American Heart Association’s “Get with the Guidelines — Stroke” tool received funding from the WellPoint Foundation. This program improves the care of patients hospitalized with stroke. It provides hospitals with a Web-based patient management tool, decision support and data-collection and benchmarking capabilities to enhance patient outcomes and save lives.
Associate Volunteerism 2010/2011
Associate Giving Campaign Virginia associates pledged more than $380,000 to the annual campaign, which was matched 50 percent by the WellPoint Foundation. Funds supported the United Way, Community Health Charities of America, the American Cancer Society, the Red Cross, Feeding America and St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.
Community Service Day More than 310 volunteers registered for projects across Virginia, including Boys and Girls Clubs and March of Dimes March for Babies events.
Healthy Helpings Food Drive Our associates collected more than 546 pounds of food for Virginia food banks

St. Joseph FoundationA grant from the WellPoint Foundation supports the Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare — St. Joseph Foundation’s Early Engagement program. This effort promotes appropriate prenatal care and smoking-cessation programs for at-risk pregnant women in Milwaukee.

Giving 2010
YMCA of Metro Milwaukee A grant from the WellPoint Foundation supports YMCA programs that promote healthy lifestyles (nutrition and exercise) among families. New Kids at the YMCA is an intervention program targeting pediatric obesity. New Parents / Healthy Tots is open to parents with children wanting to learn how to set the stage for a healthy family lifestyle.
Wisconsin League for Nursing WLN scholarships for students pursuing degrees in nursing programs are supported by WellPoint Foundation funds. In particular, minority students and those who are the first in their families to go to college are given the incentive to pursue their degrees.
Milwaukee Wave WellPoint sponsored the Milwaukee Wave’s “Making Waves” engaging school health-education program. The Milwaukee Wave indoor soccer team offers school assemblies, educational newspaper inserts, and games incorporating health education into a field trip to watch a soccer game.
